Learning Targets for Students in Reading Intervention

The reading intervention team moves students along at various rates, depending on how easily they grasp skills and concepts.  Because of this customized approach students at the same grade level may be working on different targets.  The following list of targets are ones that are met before students exit reading intervention.
 

First Grade Reading Intervention Learning Targets

  1. Learn 150 basic sight words.
  2. Complete Reading Intervention Checklist
  3. Meet Aimsweb learning targets for phonemic segmentation, letter sound fluency, letter naming fluency, and nonsense word fluency.
  4. Reading at least 30 words per minute by the end of first grade.
  5. Retell a story with 80% of the important details.
Second Grade Reading Intervention Learning Targets
  1. Learn 600 basic sight words.
  2. Master decoding strategy and apply with 80% accuracy to two syllable second grade words.
  3. Learn the following spelling patterns and apply in reading and spelling:  closed and open syllables, final e, and basic vowel teams.
  4. Retell an independently read story with 80% detail accuracy.
  5. Read at least 75 words per minute by the end of second grade.
Third Grade Reading Intervention Learning Targets
  1. Read the first two rows of the ending grid to learn to pronounce common Latin suffixes.
  2. Decode multiple syllable words with 80% accuracy.
  3. During the year master 1000 sight words and 25 key vocabulary words.
  4. Continue to improve in reading fluency following the growth target to support reading comprehension.
  5. Use evidence from the text to accurately understand text.
  6. Consistently and accurately determine the main idea of a paragraph and a complete text.
  7. Correctly identify elements of the plot in a narrative text.
  8. Identify elements of a narrative text that support the development of characterization and plot.
  9. Consistently use context clues to determine meanings of unknown words.
  10. Consistently use common prefixes, suffixes, roots, and word parts to determine meanings of unknown words.
Fourth Grade Reading Intervention Learning Targets
  1. Read the ending grid and apply the endings to pronounce words with Latin endings.
  2. Decode 4th grade level multiple syllable words with 80% accuracy.
  3. During the year master 2000 sight words and 25 key vocabulary words.
  4. Continue to improve in reading fluency following the growth target to support reading comprehension.
  5. Consistently and accurately determine a logical summary statement of a paragraph and a complete text.
  6. Accurately determine nonfiction text structure and use text structure to find important information in a nonfiction text.
  7. Correctly identify elements of the plot in a narrative text.
  8. Analyze elements of a narrative text that support the development of characterization, plot, perspective, and structure of a narrative text.
  9. Consistently use context clues to determine meanings of unknown words.
  10. Consistently use 4th grade level common prefixes, suffixes, roots, and word parts to determine meanings of unknown words.
Fifth Grade Reading Intervention Learning Targets
  1. Decode 5th grade level multiple syllable words with 80% accuracy.
  2. Understand and use meanings of 25 key vocabulary words for 5th grade.
  3. Continue to improve in reading fluency following the growth target to support reading comprehension.
  4. Consistently and accurately determine a logical summary based on text structure.
  5. Consistently make logical inferences based on evidence in text.
  6. Analyze author’s point of view on an issue using word connotation skills analysis of author’s evidence.
  7. Analyze elements of a narrative text that support the development of characterization, plot, perspective, theme, and structure of a narrative text.
  8. Consistently use context clues to determine meanings of unknown words.
  9. Consistently use 5th grade level common prefixes, suffixes, roots, and word parts to determine meanings of unknown words.
  10. Accurately recognize the following genres:modern realistic fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, fables/fairy tales, and informational text.

Sixth Grade Reading Intervention Learning Targets
  1. Decode 6th grade level multiple syllable words with 80% accuracy.
  2. Continue to improve in reading fluency following the growth target to support reading comprehension.
  3. Consistently and accurately determine a logical summary based on text structure.
  4. Consistently make logical inferences based on text.
  5. Analyze author’s point of view on an issue using word connotation skills, author’s use of literary elements, and analysis of author’s evidence.
  6. Analyze elements of a narrative text that support the development of characterization, plot, perspective, theme, and structure of a narrative text.
  7. Consistently recognize and analyze author’s use of literary elements as read text.
  8. Consistently use context clues and common prefixes, suffixes, roots, and word parts to determine meanings of unknown words.
  9. Consistently increase vocabulary to support comprehension.
  10. Accurately recognize the following genres:modern realistic fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, fables/fairy tales, biography, autobiography, and informational text.
