Hello My Name Is...
My name is Tyler Brackey and I am the 6th grade math teacher at Fairmont Elementary School. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Minnesota State University, Mankato in December 2011 and earned my Masters of Science in Education and Leadership through Southwest Minnesota State University in 2015. In addition to teaching sixth grade, I also serve as the "B-Squad" basketball coach at the high school. My hometown is Lake Mills, Iowa. My wife, Jana, and I live here in Fairmont, MN. We have a son named Pierce, who was just born in July. In my free time, I enjoy playing and watching sports, reading, and being outdoors.
Math is considered by many to be a difficult subject to learn. High-stakes testing has only added to the pressure kids face to become proficient in math. My goal as a teacher is to create a classroom environment where kids enjoy learning, provide answers confidently, and are free to take risks. I prefer to teach in a variety of ways including assigning small group tasks, partner assignments, and encouraging guided discovery. I use videos, activities, and real-world problems to practice meaningful math. My hope is that by the time my students finish sixth grade, they will have the tools necessary to use math successfully in high school and beyond.
